Indian Diaspora in the US
Silent Amid Economic Storm
Doesn’t America have freedom of speech
Is it a democracy at all ?
Are they truly secular ?
Will browns ever be equal ?
The Indian-American community, often celebrated for its cultural vibrancy through Bollywood events and “chai diplomacy,” has gone quiet when India needs it most. With Donald Trump’s new 25% tariffs threatening Indian exports like pharmaceuticals and textiles, the diaspora’s influential voices are conspicuously absent.
The “Samosa Caucus”—Indian-American Congress members like Ro Khanna, Pramila Jayapal, Raja Krishnamoorthi, Shri Thanedar, and Ami Bera—regularly champions its heritage at cultural events. Yet, as Trump targets India’s trade policies, these leaders remain silent. The India Caucus, meant to strengthen US-India ties, has also failed to respond, offering no defense against escalating economic tensions.
Corporate giants like Sundar Pichai (Google), Satya Nadella (Microsoft), Arvind Krishna (IBM), and Shantanu Narayen (Adobe) symbolize Indian success but have said nothing as India faces economic pressure. Their focus appears fixed on corporate priorities, not their homeland’s struggles.
Diaspora organizations like AAPI, FIA, USINPAC, and Indiaspora, eager to celebrate Indian heritage, have not rallied against these tariffs. Their silence raises questions about the community’s influence when it matters most.
Where are the Padma awardees and other prominent voices when India needs advocacy? This inaction feels like a betrayal of the 1.4 billion people back home.
The diaspora’s priorities seem clear—
and India isn’t at the top.
Kind of sad
What happened to PanIIT USA
They comment on everything
Even freedom of speech in the U.S.
The IIT Alumni Council chapters have all spoken out.
