Telcos are dead. What mobile did to landlines, ai will do to telco business models. Broadcast and hierarchical models ruled in the past. Television came to us via broadcast. Telecom networks were hierarchical. We had to trust what television told us, we had to trust telcos would not snoop on us, we had to trust the currency printed by central banks, we had to trust the government, we had to trust our bank that our money was safe. It was all about trust.
And then bitcoin showed a way to build a trustless ecosystem. One in which there was no sovereign. And no central bank. Yet there was a borderless currency. And anyone with adequate computing power could mine bitcoins. There are 21 million bitcoins and no more. Bitcoins are rarer than gold. And maybe more liquid. U can mine gold endlessly. The ocean floors may open the doors to infinite gold. But not to bitcoins.
Now add the two together.
And bring in what ai does.
Super intelligence and autonomous robots are no longer only in the movies.
The bitcoin moment of telcos is around the corner. In Perth the city rooftops produce and share power. End result is that there is no need for external power generation. It is a peer to peer power economy.
Now why can this not happen to telcos. Why do cell towers need to be on the ground. They could hover 25 kms over the surface as pseudo satellites. Basically high altitude solar powered drones. No rooftop rentals to pay. Why does anyone need WhatsApp- communication can be peer to peer.
In the ai world, most people think it will hit their neighbour but not them. Nothing can be farther than the truth. It will hit everyone. It will redefine health, wealth and relationships. As well as education and livelihoods. Or governments. And god forbid but ai will make it hard to maintain territorial integrity or democratic institutions. Ai favours dictatorship over democracy – unless rogue technologies are handcuffed and imprisoned.
Telecom networks will be crowd sourced, operate peer to peer and get airborne. Spectrum will be impossible to sell or police. Handset prices will collapse as thin client architectures kill the computer architecture. Ai data centres will enable terminal virtualisation.
Central banks have no role in bitcoin
Telcos will have no role in Ai networks
Incumbency will be a liability
Airtel and Jio will have to pay the price
Of being the last two standing
In under ten years leading telcos like Airtel may go into insolvency. Networks will be crowdsourced and crowd managed. And crowd funded. With peer to peer communications.
Few can predict it because we believe that a body will remain in a state of rest or uniform motion unless hit by an external unbalanced force. We expect that force to have a finite mass. And thus a limited force.
But ai is intangible. And infinite.
It will destroy completely.
