NIJA — TRULY YOUR OWN.

You can buy a smartphone. But do you really own it?

The operating system is controlled by someone else, the ecosystem belongs to someone else, much of the software is governed by someone else, and increasingly, your data and digital identity flow through systems you neither control nor fully see. You can be denied access with no remedy.

The smartphone has become our identity, our camera, our wallet, our workplace, our library, our map, our communications system and our interface with artificial intelligence. Or an indication of our status.

The question therefore is no longer simply who buys the phone. The question is: who owns it ?

On 2.10.26, the IIT Alumni Council and TEMA are unveiling NIJA.

NIJA comes from the Sanskrit idea of nija — one’s own. The philosophy : technology should return ownership and control to the individual.

Not merely Made in India.
Truly your own.

Apple is made in India but it is neither Indian nor your own.

India has demonstrated that starting with NsE, world beating public digital infrastructure can be built.

The next frontier is different.

It is personal.

It is about the device that sits in your pocket and knows more about your life than almost anything else you possess.

As artificial intelligence moves from distant cloud servers into the devices we carry, the stakes become even higher. The device will not merely store our information. It will increasingly understand our behaviour, anticipate our needs, assist our decisions and act on our behalf.

That makes trust fundamental.

NIJA is an attempt to ask a deceptively simple question:

Can we build technology where the individual remains the ultimate owner of the device, the identity, the data and the intelligence? This is why NIJA is not merely another smartphone.

It is a proposition about the future of digital ownership. A future where privacy is not an afterthought but an architectural principle. Where security is built into the foundation. Where Indian design and intellectual property matter. Where sovereignty does not mean isolation, but the ability to remain in control.

The journey of Indian technology has moved from consumption to connectivity, from connectivity to digital infrastructure, and now from infrastructure to intelligence.

The next step must be ownership.

Because a civilisation that controls its physical infrastructure but does not control its digital identity remains dependent. And a nation that can manufacture millions of devices but cannot determine the rules governing the intelligence inside those devices has built factories, not technological sovereignty.

That the most important technology in your life should not merely be something you use.

It should be something you own.

NIJA.
Truly Your Own.
